Pain leads to empathy

I was texting with my new friend Anthony this weekend. He suffers from chronic pain from a military injury and self criticism from abuse as a child. I swear, I want to hug every person I know who suffered from lack of love as a child and tell them they’re ok.

I asked Anthony if he meditated and shared that it helped me quiet some of the negative thoughts in my mind. He said his mind was rarely quiet, but that he believed “God marked us as very special to have empathy and compassion for others.”

This brought tears to my eyes.

Can you imagine, someone neglected and given up as a child suffering from physical can have such compassion for others?

I had never considered this as a beautiful upside to pain and loss, the ability to see suffering in others and care for them. Do you believe God sends people to you for a reason?
